Monthly Archives: June 2013

I think that I have known that I wanted to be a writer since I was a kid. I would make up stories to tell my grandmother, and she would patiently listen and praise them all out of proportion to how good they were, but then she would gently offer suggestions, especially as I got older, on how to make the stories better.

Once I was in high school, I had an English teacher in 11th grade that greatly encouraged me as well, but I let it go.

Many years later, I started writing humor, based on experiences in my life, and I enjoyed it and even got my first submission published, but then came the sophomore jinx. I never even tried to get anything else published for years though I wrote many more short, humorous stories. I finally made a half-hearted attempt with another humor piece by submitting it to two magazines, but I was rejected and subsequently dejected. I wanted validation and was afraid I would not get it again.

Then, starting on May 12th, 2013, just a little over two weeks ago, I thought I would try my hand at writing something other than first-person humor and I discovered that I really loved it. Since then, I have already written about half of a mystery novel (over 36,000 words so far) and come up with the complete plots for four more in what I am currently calling the Jack and Elle series. I also have some inklings of ideas for four other books in the series and some books completely unrelated to that series, including two science fiction novels.

I have had an epiphany! It is so much easier, and more fun, to me anyway, to write works of complete fiction, versus trying to tell a true story and make it funny. I doubt that I will ever stop writing some humor, but I can’t wait to finish getting these mystery novels out of my head and into books.

At the rate I am going, I plan to have the book finished and ready to go by early this summer. I plan to offer at least a preview of it here, once it is complete and has been under the editor’s careful eye.

I hope you will enjoy hearing about my journey into writing fiction as well as the books that come from it.

Regards,

J.B. Collum
